The local administration has deployed an emergency response team to assist and evacuate the affected people. 43 homes are found destroyed and collapsed into the sea. In addition, dozens of fishermen’s boats were smashed by the waves. Extreme weather also caused a whirlwind to take place in some other areas in the province. Rehobot Ship from Oeba harbor was also thumped by the high waves on Tuesday. As many as 15 passengers and ship crews were rescued by local fishermen who happened to be around the scene. “Most of the passengers jumped into the sea on jerry cans and boards. Birds fall from the sky in California

January 12, 2011 - “Over 100 birds were found dead along a California highway this past weekend, and thousands of dead fish were reported along Chicago’s lakefront prior to that. A smaller incident of around 30 dead birds was also reported in Missouri. According to the AP, the dead birds found along Highway 101 in California “were intact and had not been shot.” Thousands of gizzard shad, a member of the herring family, were found dead in Chicago’s harbors, many floating in ice, The Sun-Time reports. Even more abnormal, according to wildlife experts, was the sight of Canada geese and mallards munching on the dead fish, something not ordinarily a part of their diet. California and Illinois join countless other states that have seen mass animal deaths in the past weeks.” -Huffington Post

Cold? Thousands of dead fish float in Lake Michigan

January 12, 2011 - “CHICAGO, Jan. 11 (UPI) — Geese and mallards are eating dead or dying gizzard shad frozen in ice in Chicago harbors or floating in open patches of water, biologists said. Thousands of dead gizzard shad, fish in the herring family, could signal a major die-off in Chicago’s harbors, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. “Gizzard shad are pretty sensitive,” Lake Michigan Program biologist Dan Makauskas said. “On the toughness scale, the herrings are pretty soft.” The shad die-off was first documented last week by Chicago fisherman Carl Vizzone, who said he noticed Canadian geese and mallards eating dying shad in open water by DuSable and Diversey harbors. “This is not normal,” he said. Other species of fish do not appear to be involved in the die-off, the Sun-Times said. Makauskas theorized the young shad may not have built up enough reserves to survive the early onset of very cold weather.” -UPI
