3.5 magnitude earthquake shakes western Scotland
January 23, 2011 – SCOTLAND – “An earthquake has been recorded in western Scotland. The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the 3.5-magnitude quake struck in Glenuig, 25 miles (40km) west of Fort William in the Highlands at about 0600 GMT. People in Inverness, Skye and Oban, reported feeling tremors, which were experienced across the west Highlands. The BGS said such an earthquake might be felt up to 120km (74 miles) away but was unlikely to cause much damage. It comes two weeks after residents in the North Yorkshire town of Ripon experienced a quake of a similar size on 4 January. The Highland quake was the largest in the area since a seismic event of a magnitude of 3.4 was detected at Glenfinnan in October 2008. Seismologist Davie Galloway said the UK tended to experience such quakes, on average, about once a year- though this year has already seen more than two. He said: “This quake was recorded on our instruments in Wales and in Shetland but it was actually felt by people 120km away in Inverness. “We had a few calls from people who said they felt a vibration in their beds and also from people who said their cats were going mad.” Mr Galloway said the quake originated from 16km below the ground.” -BBC

Nova Scotia coastal town hit by storm from hell
January 23, 2011 – HALLS HARBOUR — “Strong winds and unusually high tides played havoc with this tiny Bay of Fundy community overnight Friday. The winds and raging ocean lashed at buildings, ripped off wooden shingles, covered a parking lot with sea water and washed banks away. The storm scattered debris and ripped six large propane tanks from their mooring, causing anxious moments for firefighters and local residents. A local lobster and scallop fisherman, Bobby Vaughan, called 911 late Friday night after noticing that the tanks, torn from the back of the Halls Harbour Lobster Pound, were leaking gas. “It was like a war-zone overnight,” Vaughan, who also serves with the Halls Harbour fire department, said Saturday. “Debris was flying everywhere and the water was coming over the wharf, washing everything over. Everything eroded away. . . . Two containers washed down into the harbour, along with a refrigeration unit and pumps.” Deputy Fire Chief Scott Tipple said the six 226-kilogram propane tanks were secured overnight, but for a time he feared they could explode. There were five large fishing boats moored in the harbour at the time. Firefighters salvaged the gas tanks and stayed on the scene through night. . High tides and lashing winds were causing more concerns Saturday afternoon. “We had a lot of damage,” Dick Killam, a resident and the community’s representative on Kings County council, said. The storm was worse than the 1997 tempest that caused major damage to the community’s wharves, the councillor said. The wharves, which were rebuilt back then, withstood the onslaught this time around, but rushing water covered the parking lot behind the lobster pound, washing away much of its gravel base and the banks. The tides lashed against the back of the building, ripping shingles from the walls. “All this damage today doesn’t help things much,” Killam said, noting that the severity of storms appears to be increasing.” The Chronicle Hearald
Auckland beach sinks under usually high tide and rain
January 23, 2011 – AUCKLAND – “Firefighters have been called to more than a hundred incidents related to flooding, with the worst affected areas in Auckland’s CBD, the North Shore and eastern suburbs. Extreme high tides and torrential rain have damaged scores of homes and businesses and swamped motorways. It’s a coveted spot: homes with an expansive sea view. But today that view came a little too close for the residents of Bucklands Beach, and the speed of the flooding caught many by surprise. “I went out and went to regular sports practice and came home and I don’t know, I’m trying to find out as well, I don’t even know if I can get back,” says resident Daniel. A king tide, compounded by heavy rain and strong winds, was the cause. And it made itself felt over much of Auckland, flooding parts of the CBD and 17 suburbs, including upmarket Epsom and Remuera. The high tide has caused flooding on several sections of motorway in Auckland, including on the North Western motorway, which has been closed eastbound until the mess is cleaned up.” -3 News.nz

The claim that 2010 is '2nd warmest year on record'
is delusional, irrelevant & disingenuous
Piers Corbyn
21 Jan 11 - "Warmist (warm is cold) explanations for extreme events are as useless as saying "Wet days cause rain”, says Corbyn.
"WHY is there a statistically highly significant systematic inverse relationship between the number of stations they selected for ‘official’ use and the average temperatures resulting?
" What average temperature would result from the 62% of stations they removed since around the 1960s - which had the coldest temperature averages and the highest number of stations - up to the present decade - which is officially the warmest and has the least number of stations?
"Anyone with a brain can see that this systematic connection means that either temperature is magically determined by the number of stations or there has been systematic selecting of data which is best described as data fraud”, said Piers.
"This question requires an international inquiry which is independent of any of the organizations involved in this data creation. ( See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPMmCruPAWU )
"ALL the global warmist predictions since 2000 have failed and the OPPOSITE types of extremes (floods, supercold and blizzards) to their predictions (droughts, warm winters and the end-of-snow) have occurred, so their warmist (or warm is cold) explanations for extreme events are as useless as saying "Wet days cause rain”.
"If weather were just entertainment this would not matter but their refusal to accept their total failure forces up energy and food prices through low carbon cult measures and holds back real science which directly prevents governments and authorities from applying useful forecasts which can reduce suffering and save lives.
"NOTE The Main USA TV channels reported WeatherAction correctly predicted the coldest December in UK for 100 years, yet the BBC carry nothing. Why?"

21 Jan 11- "This is bullsh--t," says astrophysicist Piers Corbyn. "The idea that warming can somehow cause cooling is fiction and lies created by the global warming lobby."
"These are the same people who told us that snow would become a thing of the past in Europe. They told us we would have ongoing hotter and hotter summers. Ongoing warmer and warmer winters. That has not happened.
"All their predictions have failed. Absolutely. ALL of them. ALL their predictions.
"All their predictions have failed. Absolutely. ALL of them. ALL their predictions.
"Now they're saying that warming is cooling. It's nonsense. It's utter nonsense.
"They're acting like a failed cult whose predictions have not come true.
"Their predictions are also fraud. I'd like to know what happened to the 62 percent of stations they have removed.
"They lie about their forecasts.
"This is bulls--t. These people cannot be trusted with anything.

New record cold temperatures in Minnesota
From NWS Duluth, MN, an old record beaten by five degrees:RECORD EVENT REPORT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DULUTH MN
518 PM CST FRI JAN 21 2011
...RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE SET AT INTERNATIONAL FALLS MN...
A RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE OF -46 DEGREES WAS SET AT INTERNATIONAL
FALLS MN TODAY. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF -41 SET IN 1954.
Here is a map (above) of a few notable low temperatures across the area. The contoured shading in the background was created by interpolating the observations using GIS software. Therefore, the contours may not necessarily match individual observations, but the overall trend in temperatures is pretty close. Areas near Lake Superior managed to stay much warmer than outlying areas, and you can even detect a hint of urban heat influences around the Twin Cities.Mysterious Bird Deaths Near Dacono, Colorado

Hundreds Of Dead Birds In South Dakota Were Killed By U.S. Government (Or Were They?)
When hundreds of dead birds were found Monday in Yankton, South Dakota, many residents were puzzled, thinking it was the latest in a string of similar mysterious mass animal deaths around the world. But this is one instance of the many where a clear cause has been identified, as the U.S. government claims responsibility for killing the more than 200 starlings. It was initially believed that cold weather may have caused the bird deaths, but then Yankton police received a call from the USDA, attesting that they had poisoned the birds at a feedlot 10 miles away, KTIV reports. Apparently, some 5,000 of the birds were defecating in the feed meal, posing a threat to the animals and farm workers, when the USDA decided killing them would be the best action to take. Sick Medicine - More kids' seizures reported after flu shots: FDA
U.S. government officials are investigating an apparent increase in fever-related seizures in young children after they got a flu shot.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday said there have been 36 confirmed reports of seizures this flu season in children ages 6 months through 2 years. The seizures occurred within one day after they were vaccinated with Fluzone, the only flu shot recommended in the United States for infants and very young children.
Ten of the children were hospitalized, but all recovered.

Antidepressants Found in Fish: "Drugs Not Removed by Sewage Treatment"
St. Lawrence River fish are loaded with antidepressant drugs such as Prozac, leading scientists to wonder if the "happy hormone" is altering the lifestyle of the chronically grumpy-looking marine animals. Researchers at the Universite de Montreal and Environment Canada have discovered large quantities of antidepressants in the liver, muscle and brain tissues of brook trout exposed to three months of various levels of treated effluent from Montreal's sewage treatment plant.
According to the peer-reviewed study, which is published this week in the journal Chemosphere, most of the drug was found in liver tissue. Slightly less was found in the brain. The least amount was found in muscle, which is the filet eaten by humans.
UdeM professor Sebastien Sauve, a co-author of the study, said that because relatively small amounts are found in meat tissue, he is not worried that these fish pose a danger to humans.
Research during the last two decades has revealed that pharmaceutical drugs and personal care products are a major source of pollution in the marine environment. Even in very low concentrations, they have altered the ecosystems.

Beijing Reports Mass Bird Deaths
A massive wild bird kill is reported from a Beijing suburb.
Dozens of dead blackbirds, mallards and magpies have been found along the banks of the Xiaojing River, according to the Huang’jiu Ribao newspaper.
How long is it going to be before someone comes forward from the scientific community and admits that what's happening is a) on a worldwide level, b) can't simply be explained away with minor bouts of disease or "the cold"?
