28 Jan 11 - Yet another winter storm dumped more than a foot of snow on the Northeast early Thursday, closing airports and schools, stranding commuters and shattering January records.
According to Weather.com. this is already the snowiest January on record for New York City, Boston and Hartford ... with still more snow on the way.
The storm knocked out power to half a million people in and around Washington, though it reserved its heaviest snowfall for New York City and the surrounding area.
A record 19 inches of heavy, wet snow fell on Central Park, only an inch less than the 20 inches that paralyzed the city a month ago, according to the National Weather Service. (Normal snowfall for Central Park is 21 inches for the entire season.) Parts of Connecticut and New Jersey received nearly as much, and snowfalls totaled at least a foot from Boston to Philadelphia.
The overnight storms broke January snowfall records for Central Park, Newark, LaGuardia Airport, Bridgeport and Islip, the Weather Service said Thursday morning.
Other regions in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Connecticut received up to 19 inches of snow.

Magnetosphere anomaly may be indication a reversal is accelerating

January 28, 2011Above- Normal: We see a strange pattern in the planet’s magnetosphere which may be one more indication of a gradual magnetic field weakening. Below: The field looks like it’s having some difficulty generating field strength when the solar winds have been fairly weak as of January 28, 2011. Interior temperature and core dynamics  fluctuations within the Earth, indicating a magnetic reversal is speeding up, may be the culprit.

Michio Kaku analyzes the Yellowstone threat to North America

January 27, 2011 - Yellowstone is showing growing signs of unrest but an eruption is not imminent. When the super-volcano will unload is anybody’s guess?  All we have is warning signs and we will continue to monitor them closely. About the only thing we know is the super-volcano is overdue for an eruption and Yellowstone’s past volcanic eruptions coincided with massive movements of the North American tectonic plate, which is what we’re seeing now with these massive planetary tremors.  So it behooves us all not to be fearful but instead to remain vigilant.

Colombian Geleras volcanic eruption ‘imminent’ says experts

January 27, 2011 COLOMBIA – “Colombian authorities have raised the risk level of the Galeras volcano to orange alert, meaning an eruption is likely within days or weeks. The Colombian Institute of Geology and Mining (Ingeominas) declared the alert on the Galeras volcano in south-west Colombia Wednesday because of “fluctuating levels in the occurrence of seismicity,” according to a statement issued by Ingeominas. In particular, “the occurrence of earthquakes with screw-type characteristics, which are relevant because in Galeras they have been recorded in periods prior to eruptions,” has caused the government agency to warn of an impending eruption. The Civil Defense and Red Cross volunteers have prepared nine shelters with basic elements necessary for survival to accommodate the some 8,000 residents from the nearby municipalities of Pasto, Nariño, and La Florida, the Director of the local Red Cross relief organization Javier Guerrero told RCN Radio. No residents have been evacuated yet. Galeras is the country’s most active volcano. It erupted in January 2010, forcing the evacuation of the area’s inhabitants. In 2009 the volcano erupted five times.” –Colombia Reports

New York January snowfall totals break new record

January 27, 2011NEW YORK – “The storm came in two rounds, an initial burst on Wednesday morning and then a heavier round late Wednesday through early Thursday. Unlike previous storms this season, heavy snow also fell in Washington, D.C., and Baltimore in addition to Philadelphia, New York City and southern New England. As snow began in the D.C. and Baltimore areas late Wednesday, thunder and lightning were common. Snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour made for a nightmare evening commute. These heavy snow rates with thunder and lightning then moved northward through portions of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Philadelphia piled up nearly 15 inches from this latest storm. New York City and Newark, N.J., picked up a whopping 19 inches of snow. For the month, both cities now have piled on 36-38 inches, making January 2011 the snowiest January on record! Bridgeport, Conn., Islip, N.Y. and New York-La Guardia airport have also now seen their snowiest Januaries. Hartford, Conn., now has nearly 57 inches this month, beating December 1945 as the snowiest month on record.  –Weather.com

5.3 earthquakes strikes Tonga and New Zealand in the South Pacific

South Pacific stress break: The pressure we mentioned on the South Pole has manifested in three quakes in the South Pacific- a 5.2 in Tonga, a 5.3 in New Zealand, and a 4.7 near S Africa.
4.7 earthquake strikes near Antarctica land mass
January 27, 2011NEW ZEALAND – “A large 5.3 magnitude earthquake rocked Taupo and was felt throughout the North Island early this morning. The magnitude 5.3 quake struck at 4.02am, 30km north of Taupo, at a depth of 150km, GNS Science reported. The quake was widely felt throughout the North Island. A police spokesman said they were yet to receive any reports of damage.” -The Daily Post

Planetary tremor: 5.2 earthquake shakes southern Greece, Antarctica rattles

January 27, 2011 – A 5.2 earthquake registered on the CSEM European monitor and comes on the hills of another major planetary tremor that registered at 17:00 hours GMT. The seismic band was strongest in the Pacific – registering strong waves in the Solomon Islands, New Zealand, New Guinea, and Australia. The Antarctica Ice mass has also been vibrating more over the last 72 hours. The frozen continent with its dense ice mass is incapable of mediating such planetary stresses. This puts greater strain on the region of the globe near the most pronounced tidal bulge- the South Pacific. More strong quakes should be expected. Graphs are shown below:

Iran- 109 earthquakes in 30 days

January 27, 2011 - Six tremors have just shaken southeastern Iran in the space of one hour including a 6.0 earthquake, a 4.9, a 4.8 and a 4.0. An earthquake swarm is currently underway. Growing seismic unrest in the region underscores the mounting seismic tension building across the entire planet- especially the Middle East. Iran’s geological faults make the country susceptible to some of the most catastrophic earthquakes in the region. A major earthquake in some of the densely populated cities could result in the largest number of deaths from a quake in the Middle East. Iran is sitting on a very active and volatile set of fault lines.

Mystery: over 200 pelicans have washed up dead on North Carolina beach

January 26, 2011 - Topsail Beach, NC – “Preliminary necropsies by the University of Georgia on some of the more than 200 Brown Pelicans that have washed up on the shores of Topsail Beach on the coast of southeastern North Carolina are inconclusive and do not yet support concerns that foul play was responsible. Complete toxicology and pathology reports are expected to be available soon. A taskforce including officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as well as state officials, has been formed and has been meeting to investigate the deaths, but so far has not determined a cause. The first dead birds began washing up on shore in November. “Mass bird deaths such as this are certainly troubling and need to be investigated, but they are not especially rare. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, about 160 mass wildlife death events are recorded in the U.S. each year. Sometimes they are weather related and sometimes they are caused by pollution, parasites or diseases, but they frequently have a human component,” said Dr. Moira McKernan, Director of the Bird Pesticide Program with American Bird Conservancy, the nation’s leading bird conservation organization. While local reports describe injuries to the pelicans such as broken beaks and gashes on the wings, local officials are quick to point out that such damage is consistent with post mortem scavenging by crabs or other animals, either in the water or onshore, and need not indicate deliberate wounding as a cause of death. The otherwise good physical condition of the birds suggests they were actively feeding immediately prior to the time of death. Reports indicate that the stomach contents of the birds was also normal.” -Surfbird News
