Harsher winter weather in forecast for U.S.

January 21, 2011USA – “For people who are sick of the cold and snow and hoping for a quick end to winter, more persistent cold is expected to hold strong through at least the middle of February across much of the eastern two-thirds of the country. Bastardi also expects wintry events to last into April in some areas, which would be longer than last year. Based on what is predicted for the rest of the season, Bastardi also says that this winter could end up being the coldest for the nation as a whole since the 1980s. Persistent Cold, Storminess to Continue from Plains to East. While cold weather is of course a part of winter, the persistent nature of colder-than-normal conditions and a lack of brief warm spells people can typically look forward to during midwinter have been unusual this season. Temperatures since Dec. 1, 2010 have averaged below normal from Boston and New York City to Chicago, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Atlanta and even Miami. Temperatures are expected to continue averaging below normal in many of these places, from the northern and central Plains into the East, through at least the middle of February.” -Accuweather

5.0 earthquake shows growing unrest in Caribbean plate

January 21, 2011CARIBBEAN – The 5.0 earthquake that struck Saint Kitt and Leward Islands at a depth of 163.7 km today is one more indication of the growing unrest and tension seen in the Caribbean plate as planetary tremors have intensified in frequency across the globe. The massive volcanic eruptions in the Caribbean over the last two years, the earthquakes swarms around Puerto Rico in 2010, and the massive earthquake that struck Haiti in January of 2010 are all indications that this region is destined to see more violent seismic and volcanic turbulence in the near future.

Lawsuit alleges Dubai islands are sinking into the sea

January 21, 2011DUBAI - The islands were intended as the ultimate luxury possession, even for Dubai. But the World, the ambitiously-constructed archipelago of islands shaped like the countries of the globe, is sinking back into the sea, according to evidence cited before a property tribunal. The islands were intended to be developed with tailor-made hotel complexes and luxury villas, and sold to millionaires. They are off the coast of Dubai and accessible by yacht or motor boat. Now their sands are eroding and the navigational channels between them are silting up, the British lawyer for a company bringing a case against the state-run developer, Nakheel, has told judges. The islands are gradually falling back into the sea,” Richard Wilmot-Smith QC, for Penguin Marine, said. The evidence showed “erosion and deterioration of The World islands”, he added. With all but one of the islands still uninhabited – Greenland – and that one a showpiece owned by the ruler of Dubai, most of the development plans have been brought to a crashing halt by the financial crisis. -UK Telegraph

Coldest winter in 400 years seen across the globe

January 21, 2011 – “As mentioned in previous articles, the winter of 2010-’11 has been one of the most severe across many parts of the globe. This includes the Inland Northwest as record snows fell in November. This winter, we’ve seen record rains and flooding in California, heavy snows during December and January in the eastern U.S. that recently dipped south into Atlanta. Thousands of commercial airline flights were canceled due to the severe conditions. La Niña, the cooler than normal sea-surface temperature event in the south-central Pacific Ocean, has been responsible, at least in part, for the extreme weather across the globe. It’s exhibiting the strongest pattern ever seen in recorded history. For example, heavy snows were also reported near London. Deadly floods have plagued Pakistan, southern Brazil and, most recently in northeastern Australia near the nation’s third-largest city, Brisbane. The Australian floods have now been described as “worst in history” in some areas. The current winter in the U.S. deep South may go into the record books as one of the coldest and snowiest seasons in nearly 400 years. It’s extremely unusual to have weeks on end of freezing weather in the deep South.”  -Spokeman Review
